1) 2nd Most Important Aspect
With the Script being the most important. Without a good story nothing else really matters.
You'd think that would make writers the big money makers in hollywood but we all know that actors get paid the big bucks.
That's because really good actors can make a really bad script watchable.
And obviously they make a great script even better. Making choices that you didn't even think of.
So how does one go about getting good actors?
3) Share your Script
But what if someone steals it? Register your work. But honestly, no one is going to steal your work.
Nobody in this industry wants that reputation or the headache. And by showing actors your entire script it shows you who is excited about your project.
When making an indie film with no money. You need a big commitment from everyone. Everyone needs to have the same desire to do whatever it takes to get the movie made.
Also it shows you who isn't committed or prepared. Chances are if the actor doesn't read your script. He/she is either a flake, too busy, or just not that interested.
By sharing our script we got an actress to agree to fly in from Canada. Stay in Chicago for Two months without knowing anyone. All out of her pocket.
She has gotten a lot of praise for her work in the film. Even winning an award. Do you think she would've even auditioned for the film if all she had were a couple of sides of the movie?
There are a lot of crappy movies out there. People want to be a part of something special. Show them your work is special.
4) Be Professional
Seems like a no brainer, but it goes a long way towards getting professional actors.
Don't have your casting session at a house, or a college. People will assume it is a student film or you're a creep.
Try renting out a space at a local community center, an office building, or a theater building.
5) Helpful websites
In addition to Craigs List you can post on Mandy.com, Actors Acess, and Casting Network.
2) SAG versus Non-SAG
A common misconception is that SAG equals Good. That's not true. There are a lot of good Non-SAG actors and just as many bad SAG actors.
That being said. It's best to keep your options open. If you can afford SAG actors. Typically they cost $100 a day.
There is a lot of paperwork to fill out, but SAG is incredibly helpful and really wants to work with the indpendent filmmaker.
